Patch cords

Three records make up the patch cord family — Patch cord Cat 5e and 6, Patch cord Cat 6 SSTP and patch cord Cat 6 UTP — sitting inside the wider wiring harness catalogue, which is why the family's specification is written as part of the harness platform document. Patch cords and gold wire for network and telephone accessories are the recorded specialisation.

The recorded specification

The platform record states that patch cords are fully compatible with Cat 5e, Cat 5 and Cat 6 applications, across cable types UTP, FTP, SFTP and SSTP, and that insert-moulded strain relief provides 360-degree protection for mechanical strain — the detail that decides how long a cord survives office and cabinet life. The cords terminate in the modular plug family documented on the connectors page (8P8C and Cat.6 8P8C formats among them).

Buying patch cords with the platform

Patch cords are rarely a standalone order in this catalogue: they ship with the harness and connector families they interconnect with. If your programme includes structured cabling for equipment — control cabinets, communication devices, office installations — the efficient route is one enquiry covering cords, plugs and any custom harness lengths, all built under the same wire discipline (UL-listed or VDE wire types, 10 AWG–32 AWG platform envelope).

What lengths are available?

Lengths are programme-specific; state the length schedule you need in the enquiry and it will be quoted against the cord records.

SSTP or UTP?

SSTP (shielded) for electrically noisy environments and higher-spec Cat 6 runs; UTP for standard office and equipment interconnection. Both are recorded families.

Patch cords in structured programmes

In structured cabling programmes the patch cord is the highest-touch component in the rack — plugged, moved and re-plugged more than everything else combined — which makes its strain relief and contact quality the programme's reliability story. The recorded construction (360-degree insert-moulded strain relief) is specified for exactly that handling life. Programme buyers standardise cord colours and lengths as an operational language: one colour per network function, lengths matched to rack geometry so slack is managed by design rather than by hope. Because the cord record sits alongside the interconnect range, a rack programme can be quoted as one package — cords, headers and the harness work behind the panels — with the cord specification confirmed per production run.

Cord management as an operational language

Experienced network teams read a rack the way editors read a page, and patch cords are the typography. Consistent colours per function, lengths chosen so no cord is stretched or drowning in slack, and labels that survive handling turn a cabinet from a puzzle into a document. The discipline is cheap at installation and expensive to retrofit, which is why programme buyers specify the cord standard — colour map, length set, strain-relief construction — in the original order rather than after the first messy audit. Cords bought to that standard also age evenly, so replacements match the installed base instead of introducing a second visual language one emergency purchase at a time.
